Response from Members of the Black Clergy Network

I’m sure you’ve all been hearing a lot about Black Lives Matter lately. This week, the Forum for Intercultural Leadership and Learning, which is part of the Canadian Council of Churches, has suggested that we Give Up the Pulpit for Racial Justice. Meaning, make room for Black, Indigenous, and other Racialized voices to be heard in our churches, especially churches which are predominantly white. This does not need to be a message about racism, because Black, Indigenous, and Racialized people have Christian messages to share beyond that one topic. However, this week there was a video released from the Black Clergy Network in The United Church of Canada, and I think it’s good for us to see. It’s an important reminder that racism is not just a problem in the United States, it’s also a problem in Canada, and it’s a problem in the United Church of Canada. So I encourage you to watch this video, listen to the voices of our siblings in Christ, and take some time to reflect on what they say.

Music Offering

Introit: The Spirit in Me

Hymn: I Come to the Garden Alone
Performed by Stephen Cocks

1.
I come to the garden alone while the dew is still on the roses,
And the voice I hear falling on my ear,
The Son of God discloses.

Refrain:
And He walks with me and He talks with me,
And He tells me I am his own;
And the joy we share as we tarry there,
None other has ever known.

2.
He speaks, and the sound of his voice is so sweet
The birds hush their singing,
And the melody that He gave to me
Within my heart is ringing.

Refrain

3.
I stay in the garden with Him,
Though the night around me is falling.
But He bids me go; through the voice of woe
His voice to me is calling.

Refrain

Anthem: Walls that Divide

Hymn: Bread of Life, Feed My Soul
Performed by Stephen Cocks

1.
Bread of life, feed my soul,
As the presence of the Spirit makes me whole.
Bread of life, fill my heart
with the grace and mercy you impart.

2.
I have heard your voice calling,
“Come, my friend, and share
in the feast that is laid out for you
to show how much I care.”

3.
Bread of life, help me live
a life as pure and true as Jesus did.
Bread of life, help me see
the boundless love of Christ for you and me.

4.
I have heard your voice calling,
“Come, my friend, and share
in the feast that is laid out for you
to show how much I care.”

5.
Bread of life, feed my soul,
as the presence of the Spirit makes me whole.
Bread of life, fill my heart
with the grace and mercy you impart.

Benediction: Spirit God, Be Our Breath
Performed by Stephen Cocks

1.
Spirit God: be our breath, be our song.
Blow through us, bringing strength to move on.
Our world seems inward, defensive, withdrawn…
Spirit God, be our song.

4.
Spirit God: be our breath, be our song.
Blow through us, bringing strength to move on.
Through change, through challenge, we’ll greet the new dawn…
Spirit God, be our song.
